Drunk driving is a big problem within the college age group. I hope to look deeper into this problem, the consequences that stem from it, and how people are hoping to solve it. Some people I want to talk to are the students against drunk driving on CMU's campus, a police officer, an insurance representative, someone who has lost a loved one or friend from a drunk driver, and possibly even someone who was convicted of drunk driving and is now remorseful.

One thing I would really like to do is travel around the world and take photographs as well as stick with photojournalism and maybe even a little bit of portraiture in there too. Brent Stirton is doing my dream job. He is the senior staff photographer at Getty Images, New York in the assignment division. He does documentary work and portraits while he travels to the most amazing places.

Should Michigan ban texting while driving?

Distracted drivers account for almost 80 percent of all crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Last year, lawmakers in Michigan were able to pass a law enforcing texting while driving, among other things, only to have it go no further in the senate. According to AAA, 18 states have already enacted laws prohibiting all drivers from texting, ten other states have laws that only affect teens.

For my first photo, I shot a close-up of some wine corks. Northern Michigan is a huge marketplace for Michigan wines and my parents are big fans of wine. This is part of my mom's expansive collection of corks that will "someday get used for something," according to her. This was shot with a soft box to the left of the light table. It was set to F 6.5. I shot this with a 35 mm lens, ISO 1600, F 29, 1/320.

For a lot of children of the 90's, Lite Brite can be associated with their childhood. For this picture I tried to portray bottling up your youth. I loved how colorful it looked and also the reflection on the light table. This was also shot with the lightbox directly to the left on F 6.5. My lens was at 55 mm with a 1600 ISO, F5.6, and 1/200.

For this picture I strobed Emily from the far left corner. I then stepped in front of the camera and drew the lips with a flashlight with a pink balloon on it then took the balloon off for the lines.

With my cat lying there, I just moved around the room, called for him, and strobed him each time. This was my first try and the most successful, I was surprised how well it turned out.

I chose to photograph my friend Frankie because I knew she would be very easy-going and open in front of the camera. We actually came up with a lot of good shots in a very short time, which I was happy about. The top photo is of her dancing in the studio. I felt this showed a lot of her personality. The bottom photo has her showing my studio partner Andrea the weird thing she can do with her fingers. Frankie is a person who doesn't care what people think of her so I felt this photo showed that aspect of her. She embraces it rather than dismissing it.

As far as the lighting, I felt it worked pretty well. I didn't put a snoot on the back light so on some of the pictures it was pretty overwhelming but I learned that for next time.

After doing this shoot, I learned to be more comfortable and confident in the studio. I learned how to set up the strobes and to work with my model . The in-class assignment definitely helped when it came time to shooting my first assignment.
